Winter Layering

winter fashion, layering, grandma style, calgary fashion, vancouver fashion, velvet, pleated skirt, midi skirt, velvet booties

Exciting news! I will now no longer have any snow pictures (that's totally a lie, there will be at least one more post with snow). I've officially relocated to Vancouver – a haven of greenery despite Canada's harsh winters.

While I say I won't be posting so many snowy photos anymore, I don't know how true that is, as I seem to have brought the snow to Vancouver with me. Just call me Elsa (maybe I should go blonde?)?

Snowy winters call for layering anything and everything. Last winter I was wearing long vests under chunky knits, but this year I've been pairing thin turtlenecks with summer tops. Camisoles, slips and anything with a deep v-neck is fair game. This velvet top feels super warm and luxurious... but I assure you, the wind passes right through. Another knit like this zara turtleneck, (and maybe some heattech under that) will help keep that chill out though. I'm actually loving turtlenecks with a plunging neckline, even if my sister says I look like a grandma... Honestly, I'm a crazy aunt at least!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Nothing is more suited for the romantic hallmark holiday than a beautiful dress, and I've been wanting this Self Portrait piece for awhile now.

Self Portrait is known for their feminine designs and quality guipure lace, and I've been obsessed since I first saw them on a few of the girls at Seoul Fashion Week last March. I was so excited to finally be able to try them on at Holt Renfrew when I got back to Canada! Of course, given the design and price, I needed an occasion to be able to actually warrant buying it, and my friend's upcoming wedding gave me such an excuse.

While I'll be wearing this dress during their nuptials later this year,  I figured I'd style it for the winter temperature, as well as a bit of fancy weekend wear (because who doesn't love getting dressed up for Galentine's Day brunch?). Layering dresses over turtlenecks (and pants if you're really brave!) has been the trend du jour for the past few fall and winter seasons. And with the camisole style bodice, this dress makes for easy layering. A leather jacket is another easy way to make such a feminine, formal piece more suitable for everyday wear. And you just look way more badass, which is obviously a plus.

To be honest, I tried to make a video of a few different ways to style this dress (because it is super versatile, even though it doesn't look it at first glance), but that didn't work out as well as I hoped. When I'm finally able to get a good filming setup, I'll definitely make one though! In the mean time, I'll just have to show you via pictures throughout the year.

Cozy with JORD Watches - GIVEAWAY!

Jord watches, wood watches, uniqlo, minimalistic outfit, winter fashion, culottes

The weather is slowly warming up (I swear we've been going from balmy spring days, to sudden cold snaps for the last couple weeks), which means light knits and my favourite culottes. This outfit is so simple, and has been on rotation for basically all my lazy, but still need to look fashionable days – but to be honest, it's rather bland by itself. I wore something similar awhile back with a statement jacket, but this time I've opted for something a little more cozy and true to Uniqlo's minimalist style.

Find out more about about how I accessorized such a simple look, and check out the giveaway below!
Since the outfit is so simple, I relied on effortless and unique accessories to bring the look together. I love cohesive, monochromatic palettes, so I chose my accessories according to their undertones to match with the oxblood culottes – the Chloe Faye in tobacco, and an oversized watch made from sandalwood.

This wooden JORD watch is the perfect item to add a bit minimalistic richness to your outfit (or to flatlay on Instagram!). The watch is entirely wood except for the face, and makes such an interesting piece to talk about. There's actually two clasps, allowing me to wear this watch comfortably over chunky knits (just leave one clasp open), as well as more fitted without having to worry about it slipping off. As someone who loves versatile accessories, you can imagine how excited I was when I finally realized this. Admittedly, it actually took me a few days of wear before I had that "aha" moment, but I haven't taken it off since.

I'm also giving away $100 to spend on a JORD watch. You just need to tell JORD what your favourite watch is, so make sure to enter!

The Lace-Up Sweater (and a mini review of Zaful)

zaful review, lace up sweater, lace up top, over the knee boots, jbrand, aritzia dress, winter fashion, calgary fashion, how to layer

2016's trends of lace-up shirts and knits, and statement sleeves has followed me into the new year. This lace-up sweater from Zaful followed me back to Korea, was worn often in Vancouver (gotta love living out of a carry-on), and is still on weekly rotation here in Calgary.

I'm a sucker for v-line tops and details around the neck since I feel like they're more flattering than any other neckline on me. A v-line is super flattering for those of us less endowed in the breast department, as it draws the eye down. Due to the thick lacing, even though this particular sweater has a deep neckline, it's still quite modest looking and fine for a casual work environment. Not to mention how soft and warm it is! Is it any wonder why I want to wear it everyday given the sudden temperature drop again?

I paired it with a short dress (layers add extra warmth in Korea's and Vancouver's humid climates), dark denim, and of course my favourite over the knee boots. I actually wore the exact same outfit multiple times in Korea, and took photos. Unfortunately, there's an issue with my new mac reformatting my SD card, and the photos were erased. You can see some of the early photos on Instagram still, but I didn't transfer enough via my phone for a full blog post, and had to reshoot in Calgary.

Top 5 Tips for Styling an Oversized Jacket

how to style, oversized jacket, boyfriend jeans, cocoon coat, blanket scarf, sock boots, camel coat, chloe faye, desi quay aviators
Photos by Christopher Yoon
Trying to channel my inner Olsen twin all bundled up for winter. This outfit is the result of Boxing Day sales and a lovely gift from my sister. I saw this jacket at H&M a few months ago, and decided my search for the perfect wool, camel jacket was over. But I looked at the price tag and balked – $99.00?! My experience with H&M jackets hasn't been the best, and because this wool is pretty loosely knit, I was worried it would pill too fast to make it worth it. (I'm lazy and hate dealing with pilling, and then the jacket is tossed to the back of my closet to be mourned next season.) So I put it down and walked away, set on a more fitted, 4x the price coat from Club Monaco

Of course that didn't happen either, and with a friend insisting we go Boxing Day shopping, I dropped by H&M again. And lo and behold – one oversized, camel cocoon jacket in my size. I snatched it up, along with a pink, wool jacket (also the last one in the store), and my winter closet was complete.

I posted this look on Instagram the other day, and a friend asked me if I had any tips for styling oversized jackets. Now that story time is over, read on to know how not to drown in the oh so trendy cocoon coat.

What are your favourite tips for styling an oversized jacket? Let me know in the comments!

1. Watch for bulk

One of the number one worries about wearing oversized anything is looking bulky. Layering too many thick fabrics together, or just wearing the wrong chunky sweater under a now too tight jacket is a recipe for disaster.

The easiest way to escape this is to not layer. But where's the fun in that? The amount of layers and what you can wear under a cocoon jacket is of course dependant on your jacket. You won't be able to wear as much under something more fitted. This particular jacket has drop shoulders, so chunky sweaters aren't a problem. If the oversized jacket is more tailored in the shoulder, you won't be able to wear as many thick layers.

As long as your shoulders and sleeves fit well, layer as much as you want. As soon as they start to feel tight and/or have limited movement, you'll need to wear something else under neath. Too tight shoulders = a bulky, ill-fitted mess.

2. Oversize everything

This tip is a little trick, but it'll create a really cohesive look.

With an oversized jacket, wear your favourite boyfriend jeans (I chose my baggiest – these 7 From All Mankind Josefinas), an oversized scarf, chunky sweater, or even oversized aviators. Ultra chic streetstyle, no?

3. Wear heels

Worried about looking short and squat in oversized clothing? The simplest solution is to wear a pair of heels.

Shoes are the one thing I don't recommend going oversized on while wearing boyfriend jeans and a cocoon coat. You want the heels to be elongating, and ultimately slimming, and a platform sole isn't going to do the trick. A slightly chunky heel like these sock boots is both trendy and slimming. Bonus points if you go for a pointed toe.

4. Add some height

While accessories can make or break an outfit, so can your hair.

To add extra height and help balance out the width of an outfit, tying your hair up can be a godsend. A topknot or ponytail are easy to do (especially if you're like me and fail at even the most basic of hair tutorials) and will give the illusion of looking taller. Oh, and it's the poor man's way of creating a mini face lift, creating definition and making the focus on your face, not how many layers of clothes you've piled on to beat the snowpocolypse.

5. Pay attention to length and never forget about the tailor

Where the hem of a jacket or shirt or sweater hits is important. That line can crop off unwanted weight, accentuate a waist, or make you look taller. This is different for everyone and different heights, torso length, and inseams is not something the fashion industry tends to account for. Especially fast fashion. For longer jackets (and even dresses), I find just above the knee to be the most flattering length universally. If the jacket or dress is longer, the hem should hit somewhere lower than the widest part of your calf.

But as I said, fashion retailers don't take everyone's body into account, so what's a girl to do? Take it to the tailor. A good tailor will not only hem your jacket, but can also suggest further adjustments (such as added darts for shape) to make sure the coat is perfectly fitted and flattering for you.

Pretty in Pink

Topshop trench, blush coat, winter fashion, pantone rose quartz, culottes, velvet bag

Pantone announced its colour of the year for 2017, and I'll be missing Rose Quartz a ton. To be honest, I saw so many blush tones in the blogosphere that I never thought I'd get into it as much as I did. Alas, it's become a fast favourite and wardrobe staple of mine.

It pairs well with rich tones like these burgundy culottes (whatever will I do when those go out of style?!) and blue velvet mini bag. I just can't see Greenery doing that. But I suppose that's what differentiates someone who follows trends, vs someone with style so to speak. Blush may not be the "it" colour next year, but it will still be one of my favourites and most worn non-neutral neutrals.

What colour makes up the majority of your closet? Or what was your favourite colour of the year by Pantone?

Transitional Dressing: The Blanket Scarf

over the knee boots, Poncho, blanket scarf, chloe faye

As the temperature drops the layers are starting to add up. It's actually -25ÂșC here this week, so this outfit really isn't even applicable anymore. No more bare legs for the season, that's for sure. I took this last week, on one of the last warmish days to attend a few craft fairs downtown (it's something my mom really got into this year).

This blanket scarf has been in my travel arsenal since last year, but I've rarely used it outside of an airport or train. It came out a few times during the winter in Korea as it's versatility allows me to fold it up, and wrap it around my neck and face to keep the most bitter of winds out.

I actually plan on wearing it a lot more come spring, since I've discovered how perfect it is for adding an extra bit of warmth over a sweater, without having to deal with your sleeves getting shoved up to your shoulders when you're trying to put on a lightweight jacket (anyone else frustrated by this this winter?). Besides, Olivia Palermo wears ponchos and giant scarves all the time, so obviously it's the perfect accessory during transitional seasons.

What are your favourite items for wearing to the airport? Or for that transition from summer heat to bitter cold?
